1. For What It’s Worth                                                              - 198 Days and counting

Lockdown
Yesterday at 2PM local time, the Air Force Base I work on had a real world lockdown situation. According to our boss who was at the gym, apparently, some woman over at the base gym saw suspicious guy wearing camo gear with a backpack with wires protruding from it and she reported it to the base security police.  The gym front desk attendant refused to call the cops when she requested because they knew that guy was a regular and they knew it was just someone ignorant overreacting to a non-event situation. So she decides to take matters into her own hands and calls the cops herself.

Now, please understand that the description of a guy in camo gear with a backpack on base basically describes about 50% of the folks here on base.  So when the cops promptly showed up and took her statement, they apparently spoke to the front desk attendant and he stated that it was a regular customer that he recognized.

Unfortunately they had to follow their established protocol and procedures and do a base-wide search for this guy. They apparently called this guy at home and asked for him to come back to the base and show them his camo gear and backpack. This did not stop them from keeping the entire base locked down nor did it deter them from searching each and every office they could get into in all of the buildings.  Over four hours later we were finally released and free to go home.

The stupidity and the lack of common sense displayed is remarkable and embarrassing, which reflects on each and every USAF employee and contractor supporting the mission.  It was a huge fiasco and extreme waste of many hours of productivity. I just shake my head and wonder what the heck are we doing here anyways?

Personal Protection
For our road trip, we will need some kind of personal protection beyond whet we already have. I have several survival knives available, a small caliber rifle, and a few other odds and ends, but no real protection that states, “Don’t mess around with us!” I have decided to purchase a 12-gauge pump shotgun with a pistol grip pump action that will hold 5+1 ammunition. I doubt anyone would mess around with us and it may help if we run across a bear that needs an attitude adjustment using a slug round. Not sure if it will stop or deter a bear, but it is better than allowing him to run me down and maul then eat me or Snoopy. I’m sure Snoopy could out run the bear, and definitely outrun me, so if push comes to shove, one of us might have to take one for the team.  Don’t mention this scenario possibility to Snoopy… J
