1. For What It’s Worth                                                              - 193 Days and counting

Travels & Destinations

Oregon & Washington State
There are several places we desire to visit in these two large states.  Klamath Falls,
Crater Lake Nat’l Park, and the Cascade Mountain Range in Oregon as well as Mt Rainier Nat’l Park, Olympic Nat’l Park, and the North Cascades Nat’l Park in Washington.

The times I have been to Oregon we have flown into the city of Portland.  Our sister SAR (Search and Rescue) squadron was there back in my USAFR flying days.  I don’t recall much except there were a lot of strip clubs and the like there. I guess things were pretty footloose and fancy-free back in the 1980s.  I do recall it raining an awful lot and lots of greenery pretty much everywhere. We are looking forward to getting into some of these off the beaten path locations and spending some quiet times there. We also are looking forward to visiting Klamath Falls, Crater Lake Nat’l Park, and the Cascade Mountain Range located in Oregon.

We do have a few friends in Seattle to visit, as well as a return trip to the Fish Market.

The last time I was in Seattle was in either 1978 or 79 when we flew up there for a USAF trip.  A friend Greg (a bigger guy than me) and myself hitchhiked from McChord AFB located on the southside of Tacoma, about sixty miles south, up to Seattle for the day.  From what I remember, it was raining all day and we left in the morning and got back to the base well after nightfall.  On the way up to Seattle, a nice elderly lady finally picked us up after we were walking so many miles in the rain. I remember she was sweet and she was brave to pick up two young men when she was travelling all alone.

Finally in Seattle, we did the touristy things, rode the monorail (which was only about half a mile long) to the Seattle Space Needle, went up to the Observation Deck, then we walked around the city and then ended up at the Pike Place Fish Market where they throw huge whole fish across a crowded area to each other.

It was a great day, except for the constant rain which lasted all day. On the way home I remember this one guy picked us up on the highway (which we found out was illegal to hitchhike on, from getting picked up twice by the local Police) in his Honda CVCC (a car about the size of a Fiat 500 packed full of his belongings because he was moving) and we both piled into the passenger seat, and then this guy went hauling ass down the road. We just looked at each other and smiled like OMG, this is an accident waiting to happen.  Funny, the stuff you remember so very many years ago. The next day the Sargent in charge chewed us out because we left before they could assign us our workload that day. We just reminded him that he told us to wait until 7 AM before we were free to go for the day, and it was 7:15 when we left for Seattle.  Oh well… No harm, no foul!  J

Looking forward to visiting with my buddy Vernon in Seattle as well as my friend Audra (aka Emma), or as we like to call her, “The Mad Hatter”.  J  A brief rest before we start heading East across the mountain ranges and US northern states.

To be continued…
