1. For What It’s Worth                                                              - 177 Days and counting

Happy birthday, Chuck!  May you have many more happy ones to enjoy, my friend!

Travels & Destinations

Eastern Mountain Ranges
There are far more mountain ranges in the Eastern part of the US that I was not aware of.  Some are associated with the Appalachian Mountain Range as others are not geologically associated with them.

The Appalachian Trail (AT) is a 2,175-mile (3,500 km) hiking trail that runs all the way from Mount Katahdin in Maine to Springer Mountain in Georgia, passing over or past a large part of the Appalachian system.  This epic trek can take several months of non-stop hiking over some serious geographically challenging terrain. From what I understand, most people attempt to hike the AT in separate, different time frames. This arduous endeavor can be broken down into doing it in chunks rather than an all-in-one attempt.
During my younger days, before my chronic back injury, I often thought about attempting to hike the AT.  Now it is only a pipe dream.

FYI - On the west coast, we have the similar Pacific Crest National Trail (PCNT) that stretches 2650 miles from Mexico to Canada along the mountainous crest of the Cascades and the Sierra Nevada and through the Mojave Desert.

Also, there is the much shorter 211 mile John Muir Trail (JMT), which stretches from the Yosemite Valley east to Mt Whitney.

To be continued…

World Cup Soccer
As with many Americans, I have been caught up in the World Cup Soccer Tournament for the past few weeks.  On Tuesday we all witnessed a complete collapse of the National Team from Brazil against the National Team from Germany in a 6-goal first half romp, ending in a 7-1 final score.  Many Brazilians sat in horror, as they could not believe what had happened so quickly to their team of National pride. In disbelief they endured 80 full minutes of torture watching their team self-destruct right in front of their many millions of die-hard fans.  People cried with tears and pain-filled hearts, which they wore on their jersey-covered sleeves.

As a German soccer fan, I was in futbol heaven.  I know a few friends that are huge Brazilian soccer fans and I know they were in some serious pain yesterday.  I also know some serious German soccer fans that are very happy and only will be totally content with a victorious win on Sunday vs the winner of today’s game between Argentina and the Netherlands.  I myself would like to see Argentina play Brazil for third place on Saturday, which will be an emotional game for all of South America.  So, today we will be rooting for the Netherlands National Team to be victorious over Argentina for it all to play out the way we would like.  We will see what happens in today’s game.

On another note My buddy Joe has been jerking my chain lately.  He and his wife just got an older Golden Retriever named “Sasha”, and he has been telling me they changed her name to “Snoopy”, which has my dog Snoopy quite upset.  He said that he even changed the name of his car to “Linus”, adding fuel to the fire.  A typical ploy by the “Repubicans” to take credit for the hard work of the Democrats.  Nice try, Joe!  J
