1. For What It’s Worth                                                              - 240 Days and counting

Go Blackhawks!
After beating the Minnesota Wild in their first two matchups, the Blackhawks played two periods well last night before falling apart in the third period allowing 4 goals (one an empty netter) to a 0-4 loss. Playing with a sleepy demeanor, they maintained a non-scoring 2+ periods before their sloppy play unleashed 2 quick Wild goals. Well, let’s put that one behind us and come out aggressively in Game 4 tomorrow night. Let’s go Hawks!

Welcome back!
Welcome back Tim B.  Tim had to take a short break from playing our games in our blog to spend some quality time with his kids (and, according to him, to give you peeps a chance to win some prizes). He is back and he has answered two out of three of our games correctly already again today, so you other peeps now have your work cut out for you.  Tim is quite sharp and he really knows his stuff, so step up your game people!

Computer blues
Well, yesterday we just spent an hour here at work trying unsuccessfully to put page numbers on my 20-page document that I have been working on for the past several weeks. Our admin person came over and tried for about 30 mins and got frustrated and left, so I sent it to her to try again early this morning. She believes my software package is a different version of the one on her computer, which I would not doubt one bit.  Software can be such a configuration management nightmare, and this is just on our office workstations. Glad we have a better grip on our GPS software! J

Bus fixes
I while back the passenger window regulator in Linus failed. This is the mechanism that actuates the window when cranking it open or closed. Now that is has become pretty hot out, that really needed to get fixed. So I dropped it off at our VW mechanic located in Manhattan Beach, Linus’ second home. Every time I drive by there, Linus wants to turn into their parking lot.  It is his home away from home. Heck, even Randy our mechanic has his own key for Linus.  I’ve many times have dropped him off in their back lot on the weekend with a note telling Randy what needs fixing or what is not working correctly. It has been there for months at a time a couple of times. You definitely need a second car when you have an old VW.  I know what I’m talking about.  Trust me on this one! J

Be Prepared
We have been equipping the bus for the road trip and I am running out of ideas of what we might need to bring for emergencies, etc.  You can only be proactive and plan for so many emergency scenarios and after that all you can do is react.  If you readers can think of anything we might need to bring along with us, please let us know and we will add it to our constantly growing contingency list of assets.

1. For What It’s Worth                                                              - 241 Days and counting

Go Blackhawks!  Game 3 tonight against the Minnesota Wild!

This past weekend I found out something very interesting to me.  A friend I know socially told me she found out more about me by reading our blog posts than by ever talking to me, which I thought was quite an eye opening revelation. I know I don’t always open up when I talk with someone but I guess I feel safe doing so when I write. I was completely surprised!  She said she knew us better by reading our blog, which made me feel pretty good about ourselves. I didn’t know what to say except saying thanks! I hope you all learn more about us through our writings and our blog posts. Snoopy & Linus give me all the good stuff and I just put it down for them. They should get all the credit, not me.

I also found out some sad news this weekend. Our landlord Mary apparently passed away back in March. She was a very sweet lady who was a ray of sunshine to see. She was quite elderly and had lived quite a long life, and she will be sorely missed.  Her daughter Sandra will take over her assets and our rent. I wish I would of known earlier so I could have attended her memorial services.  RIP and God Speed, Mary!

I am not sure of I ever mentioned it before, but there is this guy who lives and travels in his VW Vanagon, a Type 2 (Van) Generation 3 version of the VW Bus. Matt has even been brave enough to drive all the way to Alaska and back. That is a long way to go in a vehicle so old and inherently unreliable as my 1978 VW Bus, Linus.  I applaud his initiative and bravery in trekking that long lonely road all the way up there through a lot (and I do mean A LOT) of no-man’s-land.  I don’t think I could do it in fear of being broke down way out there!  Call me chicken, but that is the truth. I don’t think I could do it myself, and all alone to boot.

I keep in touch with this 20 something year younger version of myself through emails every couple of weeks and I hope to actually meet him in person along our adventurous travels. He has spent over a year now on the road continuously travelling all over the US. I only wish I could walk and hike like I used to before all of the injuries took their toll on this battered old(er) body. I am doing what I can to get back in better shape for the adventures that await us. Matt does have a good eye for photos and writes much better than I do. I aspire to write with such prose as he does and to be better at illustrating my thoughts and observations. He is an inspiration to us all and I am proud to call him a friend.  More to follow…

This weekend I did purchase some things for our road trip and for Linus. I got him a tow strap and a come-a long hand winch for emergencies such as getting stuck in some unforgiving terrain along the way or on some back road or off-road adventure.  I also got some glossy white spray paint for touching up his steel bumpers, which could use it every once in a while.  I also ordered a new spare tire cover just like the one I have on there currently. I need to replace that spare tire with a sidewall reinforced one like I put on the bus a few years ago. I forgot to upgrade the spare tire when I did the other four, so I probably need to do that. That is why I got a new spare tire cover because they tend to degrade after a while, especially when you remove it. So this way I am prepared for when that happens. I also bought some storage options for the interior of the bus such as a storage net, a dashboard tray and some other little things that could come in handy is my thinking. Storage is at a premium and all I can do to try to maximize it, I will try to do so.

1. For What It’s Worth

Have you ever just wanted to visit someplace in the US and you never have yet?  What the heck are you waiting for? Take off and go do it before it is too late. That is what we are planning to do, Snoopy, Linus and myself that is.  And some of you peeps have already shown some interest in joining us for part of the trip, which could be nice! We wish we were already on the road cruising the back roads and seeing all the sights that we come across.

As some of you may already know, I have every other Friday off of work due to my 9-hour daily work schedule.  This makes running errands nice because I can get to places that are closed on the weekends as well as go to places during the week that are crowded on the weekends, which gives us more options. This Friday I am loaded up with chores running from a dog grooming appointment, a bicycle repair shop run and possibly a grocery store run.  I only go to the supermarket maybe once every two months even though I probably should go more frequently.

I usually try to get veggies and fruits at the Thursday afternoon local farmer’s market here in town, which is scheduled for today. I do try to get mostly organic items since they taste much better and are much better for you.  I haven’t been there in a couple of months so maybe later today I might make it there if I really try.  I recently acquired a Crock Pot from a co-worker and I need to learn how to use it. I think it could come in real handy on our road trip for making meals as we travel or just throw some veggies, maybe some chicken and rice and let it do all the work while we can just kick back and relax. I guess I’m gonna have to do some experimenting and start to do some cooking with this appliance. In fact, I just ordered another much smaller Crock Pot for our road trip usage, which should come in handy.
